Pool > Junior Lessons > Rookie Lifeguard

A course learning the basics of lifesaving, personal survival and resuscitation. 30 minutes theory followed by 30 minutes practical in the pool.

Rookie lifeguard is a one hour session for each week of the course split into 30 minutes of land based training and 30 minutes in the pool.

The course provides practical lifeguarding knowledge as well as key survival skills that could be applied in any situation.

Star Grade 1

Water Safety

  • Explain why water can be dangerous.
  • List the four point Water Saftey Code.
  • Give examples of dangerous shallow water.
  • Explain why there are lifeguards.
  • Describe different water safety signs and explain what they mean.

Self Rescue

There are no Self Rescue requirements for Star Grade 1.

Rescue

  • List the Rookie Action Plan.
  • Perform a Shout and Signal Rescue.
  • List rescue aids which float and rescue aids to reach with.

Emergency Response

  • Demonstate how to make a 999 call.
  • Demonstrate the checks for danger and response, shouting for help and opening airway.
  • Demonstrate how to check if a casualty is breathing.
  • Explain when to put a casualty in the recovery position and demonstrate this.

Star Grade 2

Water Safety

  • Explain why it is difficult to swim in cold water and why cold water is dangerous.
  • Explain what to do to stay safe on the beach.
  • Describe the safest places to swim and explain why they are safe.
  • Name 3 dangers of water in and around the home.
  • Explain what prohibition sign, a warning sign, a mandatory sign and an information sign are and what they look like.

Self Rescue

  • Enter and climb out of the water without using the steps.
  • Be rescued by grabbing a rescue aid and be pulled to the side.
  • Demonstrate a Slide-in entry and a Step-in entry and explain when they are used.
  • Demonstrate the International Distress Signal and explain when it is used.
  • Swim 25 metres and tread water for 1 minute.
  • Explain the HUDDLE position and how to conserve heat in cold water.
  • Explain what to do of in difficulty in the sea.

Rescue

  • Explain what to do when seeing someone in difficulty in the sea.
  • List the Rookie Action Plan, and discuss the different rescues.
  • Perform a Wade Rescue and explain how to perform a Row Rescue.
  • Explain what to do if someone has fallen through the ice.
  • Recognise the four types of casualty.
  • Explain the 3 A's for rescues.

Emergency Response

  • Demonstrate the checks for danger, response and shouting for help. Show how to open the airway, check for breathing and give Rescue Breathing.
  • Demonstrate the action for vomiting.
  • Demonstrate how to turn a casualty from front to back.
  • Place a casualty in the recovery position.
  • Give a bystander instructions to go for help and explain how to use the phone to call help.
  • Explain the treatment for sunburn.

Star Grade 3

Water Safety

  • List four things which make water outside dangerous.
  • List what to do to stay safe in the pool.
  • Explain what dangers to look out for at the beach.
  • Explain why it is dangerous to swim in lakes or ponds.
  • Explain what the Rookie Community Response forms are, how to use them and who to give them to.
  • Explain the thrid and fourth point of the Water Safety Code.

Self Rescue

  • Enter water using Straddle entry and a Compact Jump and explain when they are used.
  • Scull head first or feet first for 10 metres.
  • Swim 25 metres. During the swim, surface dive head first and swim 2 metres under water fully submerged and recover an object from a depth of 1 metre.
  • Swim underwater wearing blacked out goggles through a hoop.
  • Explain the difference between a lifejacket and a bouyancy jacket and when to use them.
  • Explain why ice is dangerous and what to do if you fall through.
  • Remove clothing in shallow water.

Rescue

  • Demonstrate the actions of a weak swimmer, injured swimmer, non-swimmer and unconcious swimmer.
  • Put a casualty in the Support position.
  • Perform a Swim and Tow Rescue using an Extended Tow, a Support Tow and a Clothing Tow.
  • Perform a Swim with Aid Rescue (accompanied) and a Swim with an Aid Rescue (non-contact).
  • Perform the Back-off and take up the Stand-off position.
  • Demonstrate how to turn an unconcious casualty in the water and pull ashore an unconcious casualty.
  • Explain what the Rookie Action Plan is.
  • Timed rescue. In less than 6 minutes and 30 seconds swim 175 metres, during this surface dive, swim 3 metres under water and recover an object from a depth of 1 to 1.5 metres.

Emergency Response

  • Explain what DR ABC stands for.
  • Demonstrate the checks for danger, response and shouting for help. Show how to open the airway, check for breathing, circulation and demonstrate Rescue Breathing.
  • Demonstrate how to determine the correct hand position to apply chest compressions.
  • Explain the signs and symptoms and demonstrate the treatment for shock.
  • Explain first aid treatment for hiccups and a nosebleed.
  • Explain and demonstrate what to do if a casualty is bleeding.
  • Demonstrate how to check for danger, response and shouting for help. Demonstrate how to open the airway and check for breathing and for circulation with a casualty on their front and turn a casualty from front to back.
  • Demonstrate how to put an arm in a sling.
